When I was a freshmen in college, I was very distracted by partying and video games. I had a big test coming up in my history class, so instead of studying the night before, I decided to have a few drinks and play halo with my roommate. Finally at 4 in the morning, both of us were tired and I decided to go to bed, completely prepared to fail the test. I set my alarm for 6am and woke up still drunk.

I pulled out my book and started skimping keywords. I Wikipedia'ed every keyword and printed them out. At 9am, it was time to catch the buss for my test at 10. I spent the next hour reading my Wikipedia notes and when it came time for the test I forgot to bring a "Blue Book" which was required to take the test. I ran to the closest campus bookstore and grabbed a blue book. Running back to class I felt absolutely horrible. I wanted to puke, but instead I pushed through and got to the class room.

As I took the test, I fell asleep twice. I remember waking up and looking down at scribbles all over my blue book. I was doomed. I BSed the rest of the test and turned it in. I spent the next 24 hours sleeping. I made a promise to myself to never do that again.

Funny part was, I made an 89 on the test. Guess the professor took the scribbles as answers??

In my second term of college I was also doing an EMT program through the local community college. Now as a part of that it included a clinical ambulance shift where I would work two 12 hour shifts with the company. However to keep it fair my instructor used a lottery system to choose what shifts we would work. The gods were apparently conspiring against me that day because I got the worse schedule out of anyone.

It was set so that I would be basically be getting off the first twelve hour shift just in time to go to my chemistry midterm followed by my music midterm. I then had six hours to eat and sleep before I would board back onto the ambulance for another twelve hours for the second clinical. I then again would get off just in time to go my biology midterm the next day. As much fun as that sounded, I then started begging other students to trade. But it was all to no avail so I grudgingly accepted my fate.

So faced with no other option, I talked to my supervising paramedic on the unit to see if it would be permissible to study while in the ambulance since there could potentially be a lot downtime. She said as long as I didn’t do it when we had a patient it would be alright. So I did just that.

Not many people I know could say that they were traveling 90mph down a freeway towards a car accident while cramming for a biology exam at the same time; but because of that first shift I can proudly proclaim this. Both nights were incredibly busy, almost zero down time. Never the less, I did well on all of the midterms, some could attribute this to the adrenaline rushes that were interspersed in my studying, other could attribute this to the four “five-hour energy” shots that fueled the whole ordeal. Regardless as to the cause, this was definitely my craziest studying experience.
